What Makes Guizhou Miao Embroidery So Remarkable? The Answer Is in the Stitches

A needle and a thread — the wisdom of a thousand years is being reawakened in the hands of today.

In Kaili, a city in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province, the Hilo Creative Studio is systematically documenting and recreating traditional Miao embroidery techniques. The team has compiled a wide range of commonly used stitches, including ant stitch, chain stitch, seed stitch, pleated stitch, and drawn thread stitch. These techniques cover various forms such as linework, color filling, layering, and weaving — fully showcasing the structural logic and artistic richness of Miao embroidery.

These stitch samples are created by a team of embroiderers led by Wang Yunan, a designer who returned to China after studying fashion design at Parsons, the New School in New York. Captivated by the exquisite craftsmanship and cultural depth of Miao embroidery, she chose to root herself in Guizhou and has since worked to revitalize this traditional visual language and place it within a global textile art context.

Every stitch is no simple — the brilliance of Miao embroidery lies in every thread and needle.
